Fork (hard / soft)
A change to a blockchain's rules that causes the network's software to diverge. A soft fork is backward-compatible, so updated and non-updated participants can still coexist; a hard fork is not, and can split the chain into two separate networks (as when Ethereum split into Ethereum and Ethereum Classic).
