The Web3 Book

Trusted setup

A one-time procedure required by some zero-knowledge systems in which secret random values are generated to create the system's public parameters and must then be destroyed; if anyone secretly keeps this "toxic waste," they could forge proofs. Newer designs avoid it or use elaborate multi-party "ceremonies" so that no single participant ever holds the secret (see zk-SNARK, zk-STARK).
