Miner / Mining
In proof-of-work blockchains, miners are participants who run powerful computers to compete at solving a hard mathematical puzzle for the right to add the next block and collect the reward. "Mining" is this energy-intensive process; it both secures the network and, on Bitcoin, releases new coins into circulation (see Proof of work).
