Commitment scheme

A cryptographic technique that lets someone lock in a value or choice and prove later that they did not change it, all without revealing the value at the time — like sealing a prediction in an envelope to be opened afterward. It provides the "binding" and "hiding" properties that underpin many privacy and fairness mechanisms.
